We have released our new tape, “Skyhook Precursor”.

about the album:

Skyhook -“Skyhooks are a theoretical class of tether propulsion intended to lift payloads to high altitudes and speeds. The name skyhook is a reference to an imaginary hook that hangs from the sky.”

“Skyhook Precursor” is the latest limited edition cassette installment from the Secret Sidewalk collective. Recorded in a single session at the band’s new West Oakland studio home, this piece of a music is a slice of the everyday organic creative process- five individuals of different influences but shared sensibilities communicating through the non verbal syncopation of improvisation. This recording reflects the constant progress of new, raw ideas and thoughts translating into textures and vibrations forming and evolving along with a band that is defining and developing a new, vanguard sound. This cassette featuring the full quintet is just the first of many Secret Sidewalk projects released on our new tape imprint, MG1214. This will be a rare artifact in time, so do not sleep on adding this to your library.

This will be an event thrown by the great folks of SF OFFSIDES, which will feature THE ALEX PINTO GROUP with guest DAVID BOYCE (Broun Fellinis), as they perform a tribute set of the underrated genius Sonny Sharrock’s seminal album “Ask the Ages”. If you do not know about Mr. Sharrock and this album..then you are lucky to have the great experience of discovering this:

We had the pleasure of playing the closing night of this year’s SF OFFSIDE JAZZ FESTIVAL. We amongst many amazing musicians and bands, which inspired us to bring our best. It was a great change of pace from our usual live shows, and the vibe of the venue and people in attendance was perfect. It is safe to say that this was one of our best and most enjoyable shows and we’re happy to present this live recording for you. Thank you to the SF Offsides dedicated staff, the awesome sound woman (her name slips me, but she was cool as fuck, and the infamous “Bay Taper” for the great recording.

Back in May, we had the pleasure of being the showcase band for the monthly SPARC showcase brought to you by SPARC and GROWN KIDS RADIO. SPARC is a beautiful dispenary and cannabis advocacy headquarters in SF and needless to say we had a blast playing such an intimate show for all the cool folks…we wanna thank the homie Sergio (B-Magic) for curating and being the great host he always is…here is a lil glimpse of what went down that night….

this past weekend we went to the historic Haight Street beat house of our great friend Benji a.k.a Mophono for our first recordings as a full quintet. The session was amazing and the songs sound like we’ve never heard them before…..these recordings will eventually become our first official EP release and we are more than excited about this project!!!

“You will forget this face -Masataka Shimizu-” by noa- (May, 2011)

noa- is a good friend of the band and an amazing artist.He has established his distinct style and because of this fluid, and adaptive process he has become a favorite in the bay area for live painting, blessing many events like Wonder-Full(SF) and The Peoples Party(Oakland), with his live improvised artwork that captivates all while flowing with the music being played at the moment of creation..

Based on noa-’s notion, “at the moment a line is drawn, one is released from all thoughts, and a supernatural ego will manifest.”, lines are drawn an instant sense, etched a rhythm of a moment on a canvas, and flown around an abstract and a figurative.”

noa- collaborated with Pu22l3 and Matt Oner for their “Hear Ring Art” project, which involved live and improvised inks and liquid projections along with live music sets….from that project came the basis for the Secret Sidewalk “Mythic Octopus” series here:

We are going to be closely working with noa- as well as fellow artists Santos Shelton and Erik Otto Paeste on their latest edition of their art installation show series “Meteor”. We will be playing improvised music along with the live paintings to provide an audio visual experience to all in attendance. more info can be found here:
